Agility is a critical trait for companies in order to stay on top of their game referring to my previous blog regarding agility in May 2017. While working for startups the last decade I noticed that agile companies tend to be more successful and attract more talent because they are willing to make changes when needed.

Importance of company agility

Company Agility, the ability to do the right things and to get them done fast is clearly one of the top requirements for creating the right things for customers on moments they expect you to do so. Old ways of generating revenue online disappear or lose value, sometimes in less than a year. New ways emerge, sometimes out of nowhere.

If you can't be agile, so shifting from what worked before to what will work now and in the immediate future, you die. Established companies often struggle to become more dynamic, but it’s not impossible. Agility needs two things.

  1. One is a dynamic capability, the ability to move fast, speed, nimbleness, responsiveness.
  2. And agility requires stability, a stable foundation or a platform if you will, of things that don’t change.

It’s this stable backbone that becomes a springboard for the company, an anchor point that doesn’t change while a whole bunch of other things are changing constantly (thank you McKinsey&Company).

Staying agile

Success in business today is all about redesigning yourselves each and every day. Agile innovation methods have completely changed the way of collaborative working due to new technology (f.e. Google Cloud, SAAS business applications) and marketing. The leap jump on marketing made by social media campaigning combined with big data, AI and machine learning is huge. So how to lead your company through change (digital transformation) to get the best out of your organization.

By creating a learning culture you can improve customer experience. Informal gatherings, centres of excellence, targeted training and documenting lessons learned and best practices builds individual competence and organisational capability. Investing in data intelligence will help you understand what’s actually happening with your customers.

Leaders play an important role in helping their team embrace change. To get the big picture, you can stimulate regular brainstorms, organize work sessions and one-on-ones with key figures and customers where you ask them to challenge your company and discuss the change you want to drive.

An agile company develops strategies with change in mind and has a process for changing output when needed. Traditional roles are on the line since the individual contribution will change during time. One needs to adapt and stay productive while eliminating overlap.

In order to be agile, an organisation still needs the discipline to manage change. In fact, it is essential.
